Tell us about your new single, “Overthrown”.
I wrote Overthrown about two years ago when I was particularly frustrated over how society often silences victims of sexual assault. We feel the topic is taboo which can make it very difficult to heal. But while writing the song, I realized I was more hopeful than I thought. I want to share that hope with other victims.
What inspires your songs more—personal experiences or the world around you?
For the songs I release, definitely the world around me. Music can be a great instrument for inspiring change or encouraging listeners to rethink what they believe. The songs that stick with me are ones that have a meaningful message about the world, so those are the songs that inspire my writing.
What sparked your aural addiction?
My mom was always playing guitar and piano and encouraged me to also learn at a young age. When I started writing music I became obsessed with Britney, so she definitely had an influence on my love for pop music.
Who would you like to collaborate with?
I'd like to collaborate with a rapper/hip-hop artist soon. My dream collaborators would be Run The Jewels.
Are there any genres of music you would like to try or avoid?
I grew up writing folk songs, so I might try doing that again someday. Or guitar-heavy rock like Muse.
What was the first album you ever bought?
It was probably the 'Spice' album. I still have it in my car and listen to it on road trips. But it's likely that I stole it from my sister and didn't actually buy it since I was only five when it came out.
What is currently on your playlist?
Lately I've been listening to the soundtracks of movies like 'The Shape Of Water' because they calm me down and keep me focused. And K.Flay while I workout.
What is your favorite type of performance venue?
There is something very special about living room shows. The audience is so tuned in to the performance and then you can talk with them after. I really like that connection.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I wrote a song for a San Francisco peace rally when I was nine.
What’s next for Zosia?
I have another single in the works and am also finishing up an EP. Much more music to come soon!
Anything you’d like to add?
Instead of saying, 'I'm damaged, I'm broken, I have trust issues' say 'I'm healing, I'm rediscovering myself, I'm starting over."
