Double Singles: "Waiting For Me To Break" / "How Do I Fight It"
Tell us about your new double single release, “Waiting For Me To Break” / “How Do I Fight It”? Do you have a favorite of the two songs?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. I really like both of them for very different reasons. Sonically, they feel sort of Yin and Yang to me; “Waiting for Me to Break” is very dark, and “How Do I Fight It” is very bright. “Waiting” started off this batch of songs and is about the breakup that sparked it, while “Fight It” kind of encompasses how I was feeling at that point in my life, that I knew there was something wrong but I also knew it didn’t have to be that way.
What other musicians would you like to collaborate with?
Oh jeez, that’s pretty much the question I ask myself every day. Living: Kendrick Lamar, Sufjan Stevens, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, Jack White, Radiohead, and Kimbra, just off the top of my head. Dead: Elliott Smith, John Lennon, and Kurt Cobain. And my dream producer (that counts as a musician right?) is definitely Rick Rubin. I’ve been a diehard fan of his since I was 14.
What comes first for you, the lyrics or the music?
99% of the time the melody and music come first. And then the lyrics take foreeeverrrr. Lyrics are very important to me so I almost never think they’re good enough and/or finished.
What sparked your aural addiction?
My parents really love music so it’s been around me since before I can remember, but Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” really kicked it off for me when I was around 12.
If/When you're lacking in inspiration, how do you kick start your creativity?
I either listen to one of a couple dozen songs that I know will always make me feel creative, or I read. David Foster Wallace has really been doing it for me recently.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know.
I own two of these:
and I wear them pretty much every day (not many people know because I never wear them in public).
What can fans expect from Simon XO next?
